How to Select Kitchen

Planning : cooking and eating are an integral part of our lifestyles. We all love to cook delicacies. Planning an efficient kitchen is the most difficult part of designing a house. It requires thorough knowledge of the needs, and functions the kitchen will have to gear up. Designing a kitchen for your existing or new home, careful planning would be the key to creating a beautiful and functional kitchen for which, following points has to be kept in mind regarding Style, Storages, Appliances, Sinks, Laundry.

Location:  The location plays very important role for the kitchen. Kitchen needs the sunlight more than the other rooms. A kitchen wherein the work surface is bathed in light, gives a sense of spaciousness, and there is also an outside view. If you are altering the size of the kitchen or getting new home constructed, be generous with the kitchen size, taking into consideration the family size (number of persons eating and living in the house) and the kind of appliances that would be used in the kitchen.

Layout: The shape of the kitchen is crucial in deciding its layout. The basic work appliances in a kitchen are the sink, hob, oven and refrigerator. The placement of these four components would help to make the kitchen an efficient space to work. Placing the kitchen components, consideration has to be taken regarding the direction of sunlight, rain and the wind.

Different shapes or types of Kitchens:

Common kitchens layouts are mainly of five types:
  • The straight line or gallery kitchen: A simplest kitchen, in a narrow space is the single galley. All units and appliances are installed besides one another along the wall. This gives an efficient and streamlined appearance.
  • The L shaped kitchen: The main advantage of an L-shape kitchen is that, it makes space available for eating area or other family activities. It provides place for more than one person, working in the kitchen at the same time.
  • U-shaped kitchen: The U-shape kitchen offers the most efficient and effective design solutions. Abundant storage space is available with cabinets all around the room. Storage is not a problem with sufficient space for appliances and cupboard.
  • Island kitchen: the Island kitchen is practical in rooms where space is plentiful. Careful planning is needed to prevent wasted journeys around the island.
  • Double galley kitchen: This is wider version of a single galley kitchen. In this type of layout, facing walls forms the kitchen. The distance between the two galleys must be sufficient enough, such that it does not bump into equipments on the other side while workings.

Storages : Good storages space and a good floor space would be an ideal kitchen for any Indian home.

Food Storage: In any kitchen, Priority should be given to food storage. Food more or less dictates its own storage requirement. Avoid storing vegetables too close to an oven or a hob. Most of cutlery must be stored below worktop. Drawers are still the best storage option for cutlery.

Overhead storage: In Kitchens, wall units are generally hung at 24" above the counters. They should be 12" to 15" deep, and should end at the door height for easy use. Crockery, cutlery and glassware can find place at overhead storage unit. Different styles of storage can break the monotony of a long cupboard area.

Cabinets and Shutters: Cabinets plays an important role in deciding the looks of your kitchen. Cabinet's shutters are the face of the kitchen. A cabinet is crucial for the appearance of the kitchen.
